Google launches Ohio Grid Innovation Fund to strengthen state's energy infrastructure

Google has announced the launch of the Ohio Grid Innovation Fund, a $1 million initiative aimed at bolstering Ohio’s electricity grid and fostering innovative energy solutions. The fund will support projects that improve energy efficiency, enhance grid reliability, and create workforce development opportunities, reinforcing Ohio’s position as a leader in energy modernization.

The fund’s mission

The Ohio Grid Innovation Fund will be administered in partnership with two nonprofit organizations, Elevate and the Columbus Region Green Fund (CRGF). The initiative will incentivize organizations to develop innovative technologies and solutions in areas such as:

  • Energy efficiency to reduce costs and improve sustainability.

  • Workforce development to create quality, well-paying jobs in the energy sector.

  • Grid reliability to ensure consistent and affordable energy access.

What they’re saying

This initiative, revealed at an energy workgroup organized by the Ohio Business Roundtable, underscores the importance of collaboration between policy leaders, businesses, and nonprofits to tackling opportunities around Ohio’s growing energy needs.

“America’s next generation of computing and manufacturing will flourish only with a reliable and affordable supply of electricity—one that meets the demands of both industry and consumers,” Google’s Caroline Golin said.

Zach McGuire, Executive Director of CRGF, emphasized the community benefits, saying, “Energy efficiency measures are key to help reduce and stabilize the cost of living for our community. Deploying energy-saving also creates new workforce opportunities for many who are looking for quality, good-paying jobs.”

Dr. Anne Evens, CEO of Elevate, highlighted the initiative’s broader impact: “Everyone should have access to affordable energy in their homes and businesses, but that’s only possible with a robust electric grid.”

Ohio Senator Michele Reynolds (OH-3) praised the fund’s potential, adding, “The Ohio Grid Innovation Fund announced today from Google will motivate organizations to find new and innovative technology to meet growing energy needs for not just my area, but the entire state.”
