Ohio unveils AI in Education Strategy to help lead the future of learning
Ohio’s leadership in AI education continued to grow this week with the launch of a new statewide strategy to help prepare the Buckeye State for Artificial Intelligence’s impact on the future of education. Announced and led by Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted, Ohio’s AI in Education Strategy was built to help schools and students for the transformative potential of AI.
With AI reshaping industries and society, Ohio’s proactive approach ensures its students and educators are equipped to leverage AI tools for enhanced learning and skill development. This newest AI initiative continues to position Ohio as a leader in integrating technology into education, preparing the workforce of tomorrow. The strategy follows the release of Ohio’s AI Toolkit for Schools launched in February.
“The AI in Education Strategy was created to help educators prepare students for success in an AI-infused world,” said Lt. Governor Husted. “The strategy builds on InnovateOhio's work, through the AI Toolkit, AI Forums, and more, to ensure Ohio remains a leader in responding to the challenges and opportunities made possible by artificial intelligence.”
The Strategy
Ohio’s AI in Education Strategy began in May 2024 with the convening of the Ohio AI in Education Coalition. Led by Lt. Governor Husted, the Coalition brought together representatives from industry and education, plus other key stakeholders. Divided into three focused workgroups—Industry, Operations, and Instructional—the coalition examined how AI will impact education from multiple perspectives:
Industry: Addressed the alignment of K-12 education with workforce needs, ensuring students are trained in AI-relevant skills.
Operations: Focused on how AI can streamline school administration and operations, improving efficiency and decision-making.
Instructional: Explored how AI can enhance classroom teaching, providing personalized learning experiences for students.
The Strategy outlines AI's impact on Ohio and includes recommendations for school districts, higher education, and the State of Ohio on how they can embrace AI to help prepare students for success.
Tech Leadership Helps Shape Work
The Ohio’s tech industry was well represented on the AI in Education Coalition. Senior technology leaders from some of Ohio’s largest employers helped provide industry perspective and deep expertise in AI and emerging technologies. Representatives included Nationwide, Kroger’s 84.51˚, KeyBank, and industry nonprofit OhioX.
“A thoughtful and exciting collaboration across industry, education, and government...the Ohio AI in Education Coalition strategy represents a significant and meaningful investment in the ongoing competitiveness and future vitality of the state’s workforce,” stated Todd James, Chief Data and Technology Officer at Kroger subsidiary 84.51˚.
“Ohio’s AI in Education Strategy is critical for building the workforce of the future by equipping educators and students with the skills needed to navigate and succeed in an AI-driven world,” added Mimi Chizever, Vice President, Emerging Technology and Innovation Center for Nationwide. “This ensures alignment with evolving industry demands and fosters innovation for long-term competitiveness.”
What’s Next
The coalition’s recommendations will help guide the integration of AI into Ohio’s schools, with a focus on professional development for educators, new curricula, and the adoption of AI tools for personalized learning. The Strategy also has information on existing resources for educators.
By launching this forward-thinking strategy, Ohio is not only preparing its students for the challenges of the AI-driven world but also cementing its role as a national leader in education innovation. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to equipping the next generation with the skills and tools to thrive in an AI-powered economy.
